Hyeon-mi shares the story of her hometown in the rugged mountains of Yeongyang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, reflecting on her upbringing and her deep bond with her family.
If you drive for more than four hours along the rugged mountain paths of Yeongyang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Hyeon-mi's hometown house, situated halfway up a mountain, appears. Ahead of Chuseok, nine family members have gathered here at the hometown house that Hyeon-mi's parents left vacant when they moved to the township. To Hyeon-mi, who feels a sense of wonder every time she passes through the winding roads, this mountain path is not just a passage, but the place where her life and roots began.
"I wanted to protect my mother" Affectionate memories with a mother of low intelligence
Hyeon-mi spoke calmly yet deeply about her relationship with her mother. According to the words of the participant in the video, her mother has slightly lower intelligence, so Hyeon-mi has tried to protect her since she was a child. Her confession that while it was difficult to have deep conversations with her mother, she never once felt ashamed of her, leaves viewers feeling deeply moved.
The environment of growing up while communing with nature, watching mountain rabbits and pigs during her childhood, became the root of the patience and strength for life that Hyeon-mi possesses. The simple experiences of playing while helping with chili pepper farming halfway up the mountain remain unforgettable memories for the now-adult Hyeon-mi.
"I wish we had many family members" The landscape of a large family created by tight-knit affection
According to the KBS HUMAN video, Hyeon-mi's family has a tight-knit order of respecting elders and looking after one another among siblings. Memories of the days when aunts and uncles all gathered and lived busily sitting around the yard instilled a longing for "many family members" in Hyeon-mi. Because she experienced that tight-knit affection from those days, Hyeon-mi seeks to continue that happiness while raising seven sons.
Ahead of Chuseok, the family visited the graves of their grandparents sleeping in the mountains behind the house to pay their respects. The longing for her parents, who dedicated their lives to farming for their children and passed away before seeing better days, remains as a knot in the hearts of their children. Having lost her grandmother a year ago, Hyeon-mi spent time with her family in front of her grandparents' graves, praying that her parents would rest peacefully in heaven.
