"What happens if you take laxatives and anti-diarrheals at the same time?"... Surge in cancer incidence among the 2030 generation and New York's thermal energy storage plan

Experts discuss the rising cancer rates among younger populations due to obesity, New York's thermal energy storage system, and the physical dangers of mixing different types of intestinal medications.

As the frequency of cancer occurrence in the age group under 50 has increased by approximately 79% over the last 30 years, analyses regarding the causes of cancer in the younger generation and various scientific phenomena have been presented. In a video from the YouTube channel 'BODA', astronomer Ji Woong-bae, physicist Kim Beom-jun, geologist Kim Gi-beom, and internist Woo Chang-yoon appeared to cover topics spanning health and Earth science.

Correlation between increased cancer incidence in the 2030 generation and obesity levels

Internist Director Woo Chang-yoon explained that the frequency of cancer occurrence in those under 50 has increased by approximately 79% over the past 30 years. In the case of South Korea specifically, the proportion of cancer patients in their 20s is high, and the number of young colorectal cancer patients is recorded at the highest level in the world at 12.9 per 100,000 people. While these figures also reflect early detection due to South Korea's active screening system, it is confirmed through adjusted statistics that the actual incidence rate is increasing.

Changes in obesity levels due to dietary changes were pointed out as one of the main causes of the increase in cancer incidence. According to Director Woo Chang-yoon, if the Body Mass Index (BMI) increases by 5, the risk of esophageal cancer or endometrial cancer increases by about 50%, and the probability of colorectal cancer or kidney cancer also increases by more than 20%. In particular, it was noted that while the intake of simple sugars is increasing in the modern diet, the intake of dietary fiber, which has the characteristic of absorbing moisture and increasing volume, is decreasing.

New York's thermal energy storage system and the geological principle of 'wind caves'

The physical principles of the 'Summerly Energy Network' system being attempted in New York were also addressed. This system works by absorbing and storing the thermal energy of air heated during the summer through a liquid network, and then utilizing it for heating during the winter. The principle is that when heat is transferred to the liquid in which the air circulates when the temperature is high, the temperature of the stored liquid is released again in winter in a well-insulated environment to raise the indoor temperature.

Geologist Professor Kim Gi-beom explained that this thermal storage principle is similar to the 'wind cave' phenomenon in nature. Wind caves are terrains that utilize the characteristic where the temperature underground is maintained at a constant level compared to the atmospheric temperature, acting as natural air conditioners that can be seen in places like Ulleungdo. They also form specific ecosystems through the principle where relatively warm air from underground comes out in winter, and cold air comes out in summer.

The danger of taking laxatives and anti-diarrheals simultaneously

Regarding medication, the danger of taking laxatives and anti-diarrheals at the same time was also discussed. Director Woo Chang-yoon warned that some laxatives have a mechanism that creates masses in the intestines or pulls in moisture to increase volume, and if a patient with intestinal obstruction takes them, the intestines can expand and cause extreme pain.

In particular, while laxatives promote intestinal movement, many anti-diarrheals have a mechanism that decreases intestinal movement, so taking both medications simultaneously can cause an imbalance in the peristaltic movement of the gastrointestinal tract. He explained that if gas accumulates in a specific area due to this, it can cause severe abdominal pain, which can create a physical situation inside the body similar to the explosive eruption phenomenon that occurs when internal pressure rises during a volcanic eruption.
