Discussions were held regarding the impact of invasive species settling in new environments on ecosystems and the process by which organisms adapt to environmental changes. According to a video from the YouTube channel 'Gwahageulboda', invasive species are spreading across the world for various reasons and changing ecosystems.

Rapid Spread and Assimilation in Environments Without Competitors

When invasive species are introduced to a new environment, they tend to increase rapidly in population initially because there are no competitors and predators have not yet learned how to eat them. The participants in the video cited bullfrogs or nutria as examples, mentioning cases where humans initially introduced them for specific purposes (such as food or mosquito control), but they spread into the ecosystem because they could not be controlled. As time passes, once predators learn how to eat them and an ecosystem network is formed, invasive species gradually assimilate into the natural ecosystem or their populations are regulated.

Recently, the influx of invasive species has continued in South Korea, such as the discovery of termites that inhabit places like the United States. In the video, it was shown that unlike South Korea's native termites, the introduced species survive by showing unified characteristics, such as being able to withstand various temperature ranges and eating dry wood. Additionally, in the case of the Hawaii wildfires, it was mentioned that invasive Melaleuca plants existed in a dry state like hay, which was evaluated to have accelerated the fires.

Inflow of Korean Biological Species Overseas and Paradoxical Ecosystem Changes

Cases where Korean biological species affect overseas ecosystems were also introduced. The snakehead, the top predator of South Korean rivers, has flowed into American rivers and is acting as a threat to local bass and bluegill. Conversely, in the United States, giant hornets, analyzed to have been introduced from South Korea, were also discovered. According to the video, in the United States, these giant hornets were called terrifying names such as 'Killing Wasp' or 'Murder Wasp,' but analysis confirmed they were individuals that crossed over from South Korea, and there was an official announcement that they were wiped out in that area.

Furthermore, it was mentioned that the spotted lanternfly, which was prevalent in South Korea in the past, is currently being experienced in the United States. The possibility was raised that new pathogens might move along with invasive species during the process of settling after introduction, which was pointed out as an important issue requiring cooperation among experts in various fields to prepare for future infectious diseases.

Biological Changes in Space Environments and Artificial Gravity Experiments

The process of organisms adapting to environmental changes is also being studied in space environments. Among biological experiments aimed at long-term human space activity, there is a process of checking the changes in living organisms exposed to the space environment. In particular, in space, which is not influenced by Earth's gravity, a phenomenon occurs where bones and muscles weaken at a very rapid rate.

As one of the studies to solve this, an experiment was mentioned in which a cage containing mice is rotated using centrifugal force within a space station. This is a method of observing biological changes by virtually creating artificial gravity, and as a result of the experiment, it went through a verification process such as confirming that the mice's bones remained strong when artificial gravity was applied. Such research plays an important role in preparing for long-term space travel in the future.
